12. AAA Open-World Crazy Taxi

During the 2023 Game Awards, Sega revealed that they were working on a new Crazy Taxi game - the beloved series' first major outing since 2002's Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller.

It was later said to be a AAA open world, massively multiplayer game - a revelation which immediately threw cold water on the excitement many had for the initial announcement.

If there's any franchise that just doesn't need the big, splashy live-service treatment, it's surely Crazy Taxi.

The original concept, of racing to pick up passengers and get them to their destinations, is so devilishly simple and yet so ludicrously entertaining.

It's not something that really needs a snazzy blockbuster update - the breezy arcadey charm is precisely what made so many fall in love with Crazy Taxi in the first place.

There is a way to make this work, but you certainly can't blame fans of the original game for being intensely skeptical of modern Sega's ability to pull it off.
