It's fair to say that all but the most die-hard Star Citizen fans have long since given up on the long-gestating space simulation game ever actually getting a full fat release - especially with its crowd-funded budget recently hitting an astonishing $1 billion.

But there is some scattered hope for the single-player component, Squadron 42, which was first aimed to release in 2014 before being delayed numerous times.

Star Citizen director Chris Roberts has stated repeatedly that Squadron 42 is now aiming for a 2026 release, and back in May he said that it was "imminently closer to launch."

Now, this by no means guarantees that Squadron 42 will release before 2026 is over, but it seems possible, even probable, that we might well get to play it by sometime next year.

It'll certainly be a trip for the huge ensemble cast - including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Henry Cavill, and Ben Mendelsohn - most of whom recorded their parts over a decade ago.
