12. Krypt Dwellers - Mortal Kombat X

Of all the enhancements and formula changes that came about as a result of the Mortal Kombat series making the leap to 3D, the Krypt mode is perhaps it's most beloved - to the point of its absence from sequel Mortal Kombat 1 being a real point of contention for fans.

For those not in the know, the Krypt is where players can unlock new costumes, concept art and a plenty of other cool tidbits via coins they earn playing the game. Where the original Krypts were static grids comprised of coffins and graves and the occasional jump-scare from monsters, Mortal Kombat X decided to up the ante and turn it into a grid-based adventure scenario that sees you traverse several locations, solve minor puzzles and seek out treasures.

However some additional spice was thrown in with quick-time enemy encounters, that took the previous jump-scare tactic to horrifying new heights. The most egregious of these has to be the giant spiders that love to surprise attack you at every possible turn, making the cave sections of MKX's Krypt one of the most dreaded treks in the entire franchise.

We're not quite sure if those extra costumes are worth the hassle, to be honest...
