20 Video Game Hard Modes For True Masochists

9. AKUMU - Evil Within

Evil Within is a survival horror game, but when you play it on its intended difficulty settings, the enemies you go up against rarely feel like a fear-inducing threat.

This is probably why the developers added a secret punishing game mode for those who want to experience true terror.

AKUMU is a hidden unlockable difficulty setting that you receive after finishing the game once. The mode cranks up the game’s difficulty to eleven by taking all of the things you found hard in the regular setting and then giving them even more punishing power.

Uncommon enemies appear much sooner than in the regular game, they drop fewer consumable resources, and to top it all off, each enemy is capable of killing your character in one hit.

The game mode takes Evil Within’s basic gameplay and transforms it into the most hardcore version of survival horror you can imagine. Even the simplest task will require you to be smart about using your limited resources, and every enemy will feel like a threat, seeing as they can cost your progress if they so much as touch you.

AKUMU is a genuinely stressful survival experience that makes the game’s premise feel exactly as it should—terrifying.
