20 Video Game Reveals That Shocked the World

15. Nintendo Wii

If you thought the Nintendo Switch reveal knocked people on their asses, it really had nothing on the unveiling of the Wii.

Now in fairness, it was all a bit of a drip-feed, given that the console was first shown at E3 2005 under its prototype name "Nintendo Revolution," the motion controls were demonstrated at the Tokyo Game Show later that year, and then in spring 2006 the console's final name was announced.

But the full-fat blow-out came at E3 2006, where almost the entirety of Nintendo's hour-long presser was devoted to showcasing the full extent of the Wii's capabilities amid a slew of games, including Wii Sports, Red Steel, Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and many more.

It remains one of the greatest and most persuasive hard-sells of any games console in history, and helped silence much of the early derision about the console's unconventional name.

Obviously, history has vindicated every single decision Nintendo made with the Wii.
