20 Video Game Sequels NOBODY Defends

13. Duke Nukem Forever (2011)

Duke Nukem 3D, the third game in the franchise, was released in 1996 and landed like a bombshell. It was funny, bold, brash, and bombastic, leaving many to wonder what would come next for the bubble-gum chewing, badass action star. Sadly, when Duke Nukem Forever was released in 2011, the world had moved on, but Duke Nukem himself hadn't learned that lesson.

This sequel is notorious for how much it tarnished the legacy of this boomer shooter franchise. The tedious level design and lacklustre shooting mechanics, combined with the poor graphics, shone a light on just how troubled this game's development had been. It was a poorly polished product, despite the 15-year waiting period.

On top of the generally terrible gameplay and aesthetics, Duke's signature attitude was pretty outdated in 2011 as well. His crude humour and rampant sexism felt entirely forced and like a product of a previous time. As such, the game felt old fashioned in every way imaginable, culturally and mechanically, which is why no one stands up for it.
