The technical successor to the Arkham games hasn’t done much to honour this legacy, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League bearing little resemblance to the gameplay, mechanics or well-drawn story and characters of its predecessors. And yet, there are still some elements of this game that keep us playing.

As this iteration of the Suicide Squad – Harley Quinn, King Shark, Captain Boomerang and Deadshot – go catapulting around Metropolis, tackling wave after wave of samey alien bad guys, the bigger picture developing in cutscenes is enough to hold our attention. DC mega-villain Brainiac has begun domination of Earth, taking control of the most powerful superheroes, including Superman and Green Lantern, and pitting them against those few who remain outside his sphere of influence.

We get front row seats to the grim and brutal deaths of many of our favourite characters, and while the Squad may be flippant about this, we most certainly are not. With each icon Brainiac brings to their knees or sends to their doom, our rage mounts, and Wonder Woman, Batman and the Flash all fall before we can get our hands on him.

And yet, even this sweet release the game won’t quite grant us: Brainiac fights us in the Flash’s form rather than his own, and the kill we have been waiting to deliver is snatched from our grasp by Amanda Waller and a cutscene. Well, at least we get to watch him die…
