6. Edgar Ross - Red Dead Redemption
Edgar Ross might be one of the most hated characters in the Red Dead Redemption series.
Not only did he keep John’s family hostage to make him kill his past friends for the government, but he also, spoiler alert for those who haven’t played the first game, gunned John down with his men when he was no longer needed.
It is for this reason that Red Dead Redemption 1’s epilogue, in which Jack, John’s son, seeks out and then kills Edgar, feels so cathartic. It’s like giving the old bastard a middle finger from beyond the grave.
However, when you think about the implications of Jack’s actions, you kind of realize it is actually Edgar who ended up getting one last victory over John.
Throughout the entire game (and the events of Red Dead Redemption 2), you can see John trying his hardest to ensure his son could have a normal life. He wanted Jack to not go down the criminal path, which, by shooting Edgar, Jack inevitably does.
With Edgar's death, Jack ruins all of John’s hard work and dooms himself to die as the last member of Dutch’s gang, while Edgar will live on as the tragic hero of this story.
