The Resistance 3 is an FPS set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been almost completely wiped out by alien invaders known as the Chimera.

As the last entry in the series, Resistance 3 shows humanity at its most desperate point, being reduced to around 10% of its original population.

This said, at the same time, the game ends with a surprising (and highly controversial among the series' fans) moment of victory.

Despite the utter destruction of human forces and the survivor communities scattered, the Chimera are ultimately defeated as the remaining humans manage to destroy the relays maintaining the wormhole that allowed the aliens to travel to Earth.

Afterward the story ends with the main character being reunited with his family, but if you think about the major implications of the aftermath of the war, you realize the Chimera still won in the end.

With their terraforming project leaving most of the Earth uninhabitable and humanity being reduced to a tiny fraction of itself, the survivors are still pretty much doomed to extinction.

The Chimera may no longer cause it directly, but their human enemies are done for.
