Action adventure title Shadow of the Colossus tells the story of Wander, a man travelling a vast, forbidden land carrying with him the body of a woman called Mono. Desperate to bring her back to life, Wander is told by a mysterious entity known as Dormin that he can do this by finding and defeating 16 huge creatures known as Colossi.

These 16 Colossi make up the crux of the game's challenge, with players having to find ways to climb them, find their weakness, and bring them down. However, once the 16th and final Colossus is brought down, the horrible truth is revealed. These Colossi were actually sealing Dormin's power. Killing them has been slowly releasing it, and the final one completely breaks the seal.

Once free, Dormin possesses Wander's body, as players realize they've been manipulated throughout the entire game to do his bidding. Thankfully, priests end up banishing Dormin, Mono is revived, and all is well, but it's safe to say Shadow of the Colossus' big twist worked as a perfect narrative payoff.
