20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

1. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

2002's Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem has an incredibly unique concept. The survival horror game initially begins with character Alex Roivas investigating her grandfather's murder in his spooky mansion. What makes this interesting is the inclusion of a 'sanity meter', which gradually decreases as you encounter enemies or supernatural elements. The lower it gets, the more bizarre things start to happen in-game that will have you questioning your own sanity.

This clever mechanic can make you believe your save file has been deleted, the volume on your TV has changed, your controller has stopped working, or even your character has just randomly died. Of course, none of these things have actually happened, it's just Sanity's Requiem's way of messing with the player and trying to convince you something is wrong. These constant lies you are told throughout can make the entire experience unnerving, as unlike many other horror games, it isn't the in-game character being spooked, but the player actually holding the controller.

It makes for a memorable, unique experience that still hasn't really been replicated today, over 20 years since the game's launch.
