20 Video Games That Punish You For Being Too Skilled

19. Blue Shell - Mario Kart

Oblivion Remastered
Nintendo

Mario Kart is perhaps the most iconic racing game in the history of the genre, and it needs no introduction. It’s both the most fun you can have with a group of friends and the biggest friendship ender next to Mario Party and Monopoly.

The franchise has released dozens of titles over the years, each changing up some things, but one mechanic of the game has remained pretty much the same ever since the original Mario Kart.

The Blue Shell.

If the part about Mario Kart ending friendships sounds exaggerated, then you’ve clearly not experienced being on the other receiving end of a Blue Shell. The Blue Shell is basically a punishment for those who are too good at the game and leave their opponents in the fumes of their kart.

The shell is given only to characters in the back of the race, and it specifically targets the player in first place, with 100% accuracy.

While it’s technically possible to dodge the projectile if you know how to exploit the game, in most cases, the moment someone strikes you with it, you’re almost guaranteed to lose your lead, just because you were better.

And that’s how many arguments have begun.
