16. Source Of The Blackouts - Heavy Rain

Breath of the Wild Minish
Quantic Dream

Though Heavy Rain was praised for its focus on character conflicts, emotional storytelling, and its jaw-dropping twist, there's one element that remains inconsistent.

After his son dies in a car accident, protagonist Ethan begins to suffer from blackouts, causing him to wake up in strange locations. These fainting spells occur while a child murderer called the Origami Killer is active in the area, hinting that he and Ethan are one and the same. But since the killer is eventually revealed to be somebody else, it seems like the blackouts were thrown in solely to mislead players.

But the blackouts have a higher purpose, or at least, they did. In the original script, it was eventually revealed Ethan had a psychic link with the Origami Killer. When he "blacks out", Ethan is actually using his supernatural powers to follow the murderer's trail. Director, David Cage, believed the psychic element was thematically inconsistence with the Heavy Rain's grounded tone, leading to its removal.

Ethan’s blackouts remain in the plot, but are never fully explained, causing them to become one of the most criticised aspects of the game.
