17. Aging NPCs - Fable

Early in his career, gaming designer, Peter Molyneux, garnered a reputation for promising revolutionary mechanics that never materialised. Fable was perhaps the defining example, since Molyneux made several wild claims that never came to be.

One of the most memorable aspects of the fantasy RPG is how the main character ages throughout the main campaign. Although this was an incredible mechanic for its time, Molyneux and the Lionhead team envisioned the world aging alongside the hero. The plan was that if you planted a seed as a child, you would see it become a tree as an adult. NPCs would physically age over time, similar to how the protagonist develops wrinkles and grey hair.

But it doesn't stop there. The flow of time would've caused NPCs' roles in the world to constantly change. Over time, a blacksmith might retire and be replaced by an apprentice. Villagers might pass away, forcing their children to take over their homes, jobs, and responsibilities. People would get married, have children, and die, creating a consistently evolving world.

Considering these mechanics still haven't been implemented into the franchise, despite massive technical improvements over the last 20 years, it goes without saying that Molyneux's vision was profoundly unrealistic.
