14. Oscar Of Astora - Dark Souls

Breath of the Wild Minish
From Software

Dark Souls opens with a mysterious knight offering you a key, allowing you to escape from your prison cell. When the warrior is found mortally wounded shortly after, he bequeathes you with the Estus Flask and the Undead mission.

Despite his brief appearance, this knight's role is crucial, since this little interaction kickstarts the protagonist's entire quest. For this reason, it would've been nice to see this mystery man play a much bigger part.

But at one point, that was the idea. Unused files show the knight, who's actually called Oscar of Astora, was meant to accompany the player deeper into Lordran. Based on cut dialogue, the Astoran knight would've served as a summonable character in battle.

Despite being your ally, things eventually take a dark turn. During the third act, Oscar would confront you after his faith and purpose had been completely eroded, forcing you to put him down for good.

FromSoftware never gave an official explanation why this intriguing quest line was taken out, but it's possible they found Oscar's expanded role redundant since Solaria already fit the role of the hero's companion.
