21 Gaming Memories Only 90s Kids Will Have

16. Blowing The Bottom Of Game Cartridges To Fix Crashes

Everyone remembers those glorious days when games came on cartridges rather than discs, and everyone remembers the tried-and-true method of fixing a game that keeps freezing €“ blow into the bottom of the cartridge. Is your Gameboy game freezing on the start-up screen, with the usual €˜Nintendo€™ logo being replaced with a square block of pixels? Blow into that cartridge, baby!

But here€™s something you might not know €“ this was never a recommended technique, and in fact many games came with a warning on the back telling people not to do this €“ it will damage the game. The evidence makes a strong argument that this is poppycock, however. Cartridges were robust, hardy storage devices that only ever asked for a little gust of air now and then to keep the cogs turning.

15. Using The Cape To Completely Skip Levels In Super Mario World

Super Mario World is a vast game that introduced us to our beloved Yoshi, as well as one of Mario€™s coolest power-ups - a humble feather which granted us an even humbler yellow cape. The feather would float down from whatever block or baddie you bashed it out of, and when obtained Mario would gain greater control over his jumps. This would have been handy enough as it is, but the cape had another function.

Given enough room to run, you could take off and and fly right across the top of entire levels. It was endlessly entertaining watching whole stages scroll by while you whizzed across the sky above, laughing at all the obstacles below as they tried and failed to get in your way. This game was a better Superman game than€well, any actual Superman game.
