John Marston would be the last man to ever consider himself a hero. He spent a large part of his life riding with gangs and committing terrible acts. There is simply no denying this man's sins, and that is precisely why his attempts at redemption make him a hero.

With his family held captive, John is forced at gun point by the U.S. government to confront his past one last time. His struggle is inward as he tries not to fall back into his old ways, and he's not always successful. Despite having a moral code, there's a darkness to John brimming just under the surface.

John is a changed man though, and by the end of Red Dead Redemption he successfully navigates his way back home, happy to live a simple life with his family. But when the government comes knocking for his life, he saves his family and stands ready to face his fate. John Marston is a complex and nuanced character, and one of video gaming's all time greatest fictional characters.
