If ever there was a case of a brilliant game being hamstrung by its bugs, then this is it. Bloodlines, based on the White Wolf Publishing role-playing games, was praised at the time for having one of the best living worlds in gaming. As well as being bettered only by Deus Ex for the freedom of choice it gives players. Unfortunately, the game's faults caused it sell poorly.

One bug in particular actually broke the game completely at one point, making further progression impossible. It also required a beast of a PC to run and the loading times verged on comical. Today, with modern rigs and the game fully patched, it can be appreciated for the wonderful piece of entertainment it is. Famed for its 'Haunted House' section, this was one of best examples of atmosphere and pacing ever put in a game.

Bloodlines is also particularly good if you're something of a goth and/or a fan of Lacuna Coil.
