30 Greatest RPG Video Games Of All Time

24. System Shock 2

Before he got round to Bioshock and its sequels, Ken Levine was winning multiple Game of The Year awards with the terrifying System Shock 2. The game is classified as an action role-playing, first-person shooter, survival horror.

If only there was a bit of RTS and sport in there too it would cover almost every genre. Of all those though, it was the character creation that set it firmly in the RPG section, letting you specialise in areas such as hacking, weaponry and psionic powers, easily earning the label of being well ahead of its time. While it may be looking its age now, this is still a genuinely frightening game.

Doing 'find clues on dead bodies' long before Dead Space did, System Shock 2 is best remembered for the horribly creepy AI antagonist SHODAN and its constant mockery towards you, making for an incredible atmosphere throughout.
