5 Brilliant Remixes Of Legendary Game Scores You Need To Hear

1. The Forever Famicom EP €“ Random Feat K. Murdock

To try and narrow down which project of the special education and middle school teacher turned nerd core superstar MC Random/Mega Ran (Born Raheem Jarbo) encompasses not only the VGM re-imagining that I was attempting to point out but also the sheer genius of the artist himself was no easy undertaking. My research had me go through hours of content before I settled upon the Forever Famicom EP and its associated "DLC" off shoots. The Forever Famicom EP is a 2010 collaborative effort between Random and producer K-Murdock of the progressive hip hop group Panacea. The album consists primarily of nerd core hip hop using samples from both the NES and SNES generation of Nintendo consoles. My personal favourite track comes off of the original Forever Famicom album (as opposed to one of the 3 DLC expansions) and is titled "Epoch", the primary sample coming from the SNES classic Chrono Trigger. This track not only has a very rhythmic hook, but also acts as a testament to the video game industry as MC Random calls out some of the most prolific titles of the past in his rhymes (It also happens to come from my favorite SNES game of all time). In the years that have followed, Random has also gone on to do complete overhauls on VGM re-imagining with 2011's Black Materia, a project based entirely around the PSX and PC game Final Fantasy 7 as well as a kickstarter funded "Black Materia: Remixed" album in 2012. So, in summation, the VGM remix and re-imagining community only continues to grow by leaps and bounds as artists from all corners of the world and genres come together to create something new from something old. The arenas of Techno, Hip Hop, Nerd Core, and Metal are all well represented when it comes to VGM re-imagining and even the inverse of popular artists starting to see video games as a potential stage has started to be taken seriously. As Video Games and their related media start to become recognized more and more as legitimate art forms as opposed to simple ways to pass the time, so too will the artists that contribute to the whole become recognized for their work as they proceed to bend and shape the musical genre, even as they are still creating them. What are some of your favorite tracks that have been re-worked for the sake of VGM re-imagining? Sound off in the comments below.
