However, it was not until the turn of the 21st century that video games had evolved from the simple entities of childhood entertainment to grand opuses of visual grandeur and magnificent sound. In recent years, the manipulation of the existent music from the video game industry has formed a world wide underground movement of musical and lyrical artists that aim to take the classic 8 and 16 bit sounds of our childhoods and transform them into something new and something bold. Today, the arenas of Techno, Hip Hop, Nerd Core, and Metal are all well represented when it comes to video game music (herein referred to as VGM) re-imagining. Since the inception of YouTube, video game enthusiasts with musical talent and a desire to mix the two have had an open forum for their pet projects. With the expansion of technology, they now have a stage for their work. Finally, with the acceptation of nerd culture across the world, the works that these amazing artists have created have the chance to sell on a worldwide market and grow exponentially. What follows is a list that contains 5 of the most brilliant and extreme re-imaginings of VGM and their associated artists.
