5 Most Memorable Video Game Hoaxes

2. Super Mario 64 - L is real 2401

New-Mario-G3AR Speaking of hidden characters, Luigi's appearance (or should I say absence?) in the iconic Super Mario 64 gave a lot to talk about back in the day. After appearing in pretty much every single Mario game for the last 10 years, it was really weird not to see him in Mario's jump to 3D. He was one of the main characters and pretty much everyone was in the game except for him. Some people said "Well he must be a secret character then." And so a legend was born. What's The Story? While there was a lot of talk about whether or not he was in the game, there was no proof that he was in it. Only some speculation on how to obtain him. However, the rumors became stronger after one day somebody realized that the illegible symbols in the courtyard fountain read "L is real 2401." This was the kind of cryptic evidence that the fans needed, and so a hunting for the ultimate character in a video game began. But here's the problem though: Nobody knew what "2401" meant. Was it the number of how many enemies you had to defeat? Or the amount of coins you had to gather? Either way, everybody tried to do both things and even more in order to unlock the character. But, as you would have probably guessed since, well, the title of the article, none of those things unlocked the character. The Truth Behind The Hoax Luigi was planned to make an appearance in the game, however it would have been integrated as part of a DLC that would have been made for the Nintendo 64 Disc Drive (an add on that allowed the console to read games of a disc instead of a cartridge, connect to the internet, and much more) however, because of the poor sales of the add on Nintendo decided to cancel the project. There was also the rumor of a sequel to Super Mario 64 in which Lugi would have been a playable character. However the project was scrapped because of the limitations of the Nintendo 64.
