5 Most Memorable Video Game Hoaxes

3. Street Fighter 2 - Sheng Long

Sheng Long Oh yes, this is a classic one. Street Fighter 2 was one of the most popular fighting games of all time, having at least 5 different re-releases featuring HD, new characters, turbo boost and something about a remix that doesn't make any sense, it was a game that left its mark. And, just like any other popular game that came out at the time, many rumors about the game surfaced for all the gamers to debate about. The most popular one was one of the mistranslations that changed the world of gaming forever. What's The Story? In the arcade version of the game, one of Ryu's quotes after winning the combat was "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance." This left many gamers confused, mostly because nobody knew who Sheng Long was. Could it be a reference to Dragon Ball? Maybe it was a secret character? What the hell does he mean by that? After the game was ported into the Super Nintendo, nobody noticed that Ryu's line changed to "You must defeat my Dragon Punch to stand a chance," revealing the truth about the mysterious line. But things became weirder when in 1992 Electronic Game Monthly released an article that said everything about the character, revealing that he had fireballs faster than Sagat's, and kicks more powerful than Chun Li's. The method to unlock it was to play as Ryu and get to the final fight against M. Bison without taking a hit. Then you must stand 10 rounds without you hitting him, nor allow him to hit you. After the 10 rounds, he would appear, throw Bison out of the stage and once you've defeated him, you could unlock him. As you've probably guessed by now, that thing was a hoax. But, once the audience learned about it you would guess that they wouldn't fall for the same thing again, right? Wrong, they did the exact same joke 2 more times for different games, and both times the people fell completely. You would think than by the second time people would be a little bit less gullible, but we were wrong. The Truth Behind The Hoax Like I said before, the thing was just a mistranslation. It was corrected by the time the SNES port came out, but it was too late for corrections. The idea of a secret character hidden in the game was a very attractive one and someone wanted to prove that he was good enough to unlock him. Fortunately the character was introduced in Street Fighter IV, only this time it was with another name (Gouken). He had pretty much the same look he had in both hoaxes and they even gave him the iconic line "You must defeat me to stand a chance." Pretty cool, don't you think?
