7 Deadly Video Game Sins - Sloth!

4. The Ubisoft Syndrome

Being a Triple-A publisher must be hard work, right? After you've counted all your loot box money, there's barely enough time in the day to see what other assets you might be able to rip out of an upcoming title in order to sell back to the consumer base. And with all those sequels you've got to farm out, thinking of new ideas must be really hard, right?

Well, it must be because Ubisoft seems to limit themselves to precisely ONE idea per title they make. Seriously, take a look back at all the Tom Clancy games, the Assassin's Creed titles, and of course the Far Cry franchise, and you'll see that each only has one good idea to run into the ground while using the game framework from elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, sometimes the games themselves can be very enjoyable, but you can't honestly tell me you've not felt the sting of deja vu each time you've clambered on top of a watchtower or building only to "unlock" the surrounding area.

I've often joked that Ubisoft is one day going to release "THE GAME" which is basically all the best bits cherry-picked from other titles all mashed together, such appears to be their design philosophy. And let's not forget, for a long old time the reason why these games all felt the same was because the same one or two people were in charge of approving ideas, and clearly they were too afraid or too lazy to try anything new. 'Why fix what isn't broken?' appears to be the party line, but the he issue with that is that diminishing returns will kill the cash cow you're trying to milk.

Fingers crossed, with the reshuffle of higher-ups and the out and out removal of some absolute wretches, Ubisoft might get back into the business of taking risks.
