5. Is Eli Dead? - Half-Life 2: Episode 2

The plot twist and ending that shook an entire decade's worth of Half-Life fans, the franchise bowed out the public conscious by killing main character Eli in a brutal scene, before having daughter Alyx cradle his body, and whisper "No... please don't leave me..."

We all know the rest as far as mainstream audiences go. Half-Life 3 was rumoured, debunked, rumoured some more and debunked some more, until 2017 saw Valve writer Marc Laidlaw reveal what the story was going to be back in the day, before Valve went in a different company direction.

For many it was closure enough; a grand explosion of Combine vs. G-Man vs. Vortigaunts that left Gordon Freeman alive to tell the tale.

However, 2020's Half-Life: Alyx saw Valve step back into the ring in an official capacity, some 13 years after leaving everybody hanging.

Using the G-Man to open a portal through time and space, both he and Alyx journey back to the exact moment Eli was killed. You get to zap the Advisor that killed your dad with your own hands, but the process traps Alyx under the G-Man's control.

With the game fading back up to you now playing as Gordon Freeman where we left off in 2007, a very-much-alive Eli states he knows Alyx was taken, hands you a crowbar and says "We have work to do".
