What is it with Nintendo and their legacy franchise canons being all over the place?

In Mario's case, there's precious little to even catalogue other than Princess Peach keeps getting kidnapped, intergalactic Queen Rosalina hangs out with the Lumas and since 2013, Mario and the gang are furries, but there was always a notable question mark hanging over the Koopalings.

First appearing in Super Mario Bros. 3, this early incarnation had them listed as Bowser's children. However, come the time of Mario Sunshine in 2002, new character Bowser Jr. was on the scene, and fans quickly realised there'd been precious little mention of just what the hell the Koopalings were, since those initial translation error-filled days of the early 90s.

It would take another 10 years for an answer, but creator Shigeru Miyamoto noted in a 2012 Game Informer interview that "[the] current story is that the seven Koopalings are not Bowser’s children. Bowser’s only child is Bowser Jr. and we don’t know who the mother is".

Not gonna lie - the eventual reveal and return of "Mrs. Bowser" will be one for the history books.
