5. Final Fantasy XIV

The beginning of FF 14 was so tumultuous, it threatened to drown the entire franchise. Not that they didn't have reason to complain, however, as upon launch FFXIV was a game with persistent server crashes and tales of fans having accounts out and out deleted, plus contained a horrendous UI making the admittedly nice-looking action feel like it was being viewed through blinkers.

With a critical mauling pulling it down further, the project crashed and burned in a manner that made even the Hindenburg go "wow ok", but this was not the end of FFXIV, it was merely the beginning. A rather hefty amount of money and Pheonix Downs were poured into the project, allowing the devs to take the game offline and fix, well, just about everything.

Returning under the new name of Realm Reborn, FFXIV returned to the fray a more lithe and competent MMORPG, and with years of support plus countless updates, it now stands as not just one of the best examples in the genre, but arguably the most popular FF game OF ALL TIME, with it recently having so many players that the devs ran out of space to accommodate them all!
