7 Upcoming Video Game Reboots That'll Blow You Away In 2016
2. Hitman
Square Enix clearly felt that they'd reached a bit of a plateau with Hitman: Absolution. The game lost much of the cool, clinical assassination nature that the series was renowned for, forcing too many linear gameplay sequences on the player, and an over-elaborate story that few people cared for. The back-to-basics title of the upcoming Hitman game implies a rethinking of the series, and all the signs so far are pointing to it going back to the self-contained, open gameplay in each level that empowers players with a ton of choice about how to carry out their hits. While the gameplay looks very much like the Hitman we know and love, the game's success will depend largely on the experimental episodic way in which it's being released - a first for a major AAA game. When Hitman launches in March, it will cost $15 and only come with the prologue and a mission in Paris. New episodes and locations will be released over the following three months, and the game will be packed with minor updates and live events between these releases. It's certainly a new way of doing things, and one that's understandably drawn a lot of skepticism from the gaming community. But if done well, then maybe it could even feed into the idea of Hitman as working best in separate, isolated missions not bound by any pretences of story? Or maybe this new means of distribution will be a disaster, but the uncertainty just adds to the excitement, doesn't it?
