7 Ups & 4 Downs For Gaming In 2020 (So Far)
6. Final Fantasy VII Remake FINALLY Releases After 14 Years
If you were growing up in the 90s, chances are you played Final Fantasy VII.
Chances also are, that it was a transcendent experience; a game with characters so loveable they felt like friends, and a world so rich and worth saving, you lived on that game for at least 40 hours.
To even come close to replicating this game's importance was a Herculean task, and yet, Square Enix dove in head-first at the turn of the millennium, stating that "remakes [for] Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX" were coming to PS2 "with graphical and audio enhancements."
In a pre-broadband age this didn't set the world alight, but the company followed up with a remake "reveal" in 2005 - only for it to be labelled a PS3 tech demo.
Understandably, fans were infuriated, and such began the discussions around remaking the game proper.
Flash forward a decade and a half, and we finally have the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Yes, it's only the first five hours of the original bloated out into 30, but it's real. It's something you can play, it includes the characters and world you love, and that music is just as exquisite as ever.
For now let's take this as a win and hope Square Enix know what they're doing.
