After spending countless hours with the crew of the Normandy and staging a desperate fight against the Collector and Reaper forces across the Mass Effect Trilogy, it's safe to say that very few were prepared to say goodbye to Commander Shepard. Their actions had quite literally shaped the universe, their relationships had defined some of the most impactful writing in the video game industry, and of course, their dance moves were legendary.

However come the close of Mass Effect 3, all things seemed to be indicating that our time was drawing to an end and that it was time to say goodbye. Or at least it was if you happened to witness anything other than the super-secret ending that only players with an effective military strength of over 4,000 and who selected the Destroy option got to witness.

Here, in amongst all of the wreckage, we see the charred corpse of Shepard much as we do in other endings, however just before the camera cuts away for the final time, they take one more breath! This moment sent fans reeling, as in this one timeline it was suggested that Shepard indeed lived on, and while this was a brilliant sigh of relief, it actually undermines what the series was about. Shepard's death carries weight, that they literally gave everything to save the universe, here though it was all just a bit too convenient, and proved once and for all that N7 armour is made out of the strongest material known to mankind.
