7 Video Game Villains Who Were The Hero All Along

5. The Arbiter - Halo 2

When it comes to hating everything that humanity stands for, the role of the Arbiter from the Halo series might as well come with a business card comprising solely of a picture of your nan being punched in the head.

As boy howdy does this massive mandible-d lad despise Master Chief and his mates, and across the multiple Covenant Elites who have held this title, The Arbiter has become a figure of fear for humanity as it's arrival usually means certain death for all those not willing to bend a knee to the Prophets. This is why it was bizarre to put the player in the shoes of Thel 'Vadam in Halo 2 and see things from his perspective, especially when it turned out that the role of The Arbiter isn't a position of honor at this point in time, and a title that one carries out of shame.

In Vadam's case his prior failures caused the Prophets to sentence him to carry the title, and by extension, their word into battle against those looking to detract from their Great Mission, and as this character we the player put down insurrections and battled against those we knew were actually in the right. The Prophets were lying to their followers and Thel was just another caught up in their vortex of hate. Thankfully our time as this sympathetic villain was shortlived as soon The Arbiter realizes the truth and sets about helping Master Chief liberate the galaxy from the threat of Flood and Prophet alike.
