7 Video Games You Have To Play Twice To Understand
2. Neir: Automata
Neir: Automata is a wonderful game isn't it? From start to finish, this is a flurry of over-the-top action, barmy off-kilter comedy, and of course a healthy dose of swagger that only Platinum Games can add to a title. The constant mash-up of genres, missions, and boss battles means there is never a dull moment, however on a first playthrough, you might be left with your head spinning so much that it detaches.
The pace of the narrative is so rapid that some instances make sense only in the loosest definitions, however, this is yet another brilliant move by the devs because these gaps are actually filled in by subsequent playthroughs with different characters. For example, a scene in which 2B might meet a boss and then smash them into base elements, 9S will be able to hack into and be able to extract information about them such as their backstories. This information builds on the larger narrative, connecting you to the story in deeper and deeper ways.
Plus when 9S is separated from 2B you now get to experience his adventures, once more adding in details that are glazed over or absent from the first playthrough. And then to top all this off, completing this campaign unlocks another Act with another new character taking everything you've now played through twice and using it as the basis for a brand new tale!
It's a bonkers way of telling a story, but there's really nothing quite like it, allowing Nier: Automata to be at once utterly baffling but entirely engaging the more you chip away at it.
