8 "Awesome" Video Game Mechanics We All HATED

4. Unlocking Cars Based On Rankings - R4: Ridge Racer Type 4

Now here's an idea that seemed absolutely perfect when chatting about it in the planning stages but became as confusing to wrap your head around as the title of the game it was attached to.

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4... does that mean that the game is actually called Ridge Racer Type 4: Ridge Racer Type 4?

In "R to the power 4" you'd unlock cars for your collection based on the position in which you finished the tournament, meaning that if you placed first across all the races you'd get a first-place-esque prize of the fastest car and the most cash. All sounds grand, right? Well, what if I were to tell you that sometimes better and more desirable cars were actually rewarded for coming in second or third? That means that you're going to need to race the events again but this time purposely throw the races in order to land where you need to on the scoreboard.

Match-fixing. As a mechanic in a video game. I've officially seen it all.

Plus you have to feel sorry for those questing for 100% as they'd have to do this multiple times on each even to complete their collection and unlock the final car of the game!
