8 Brilliant Video Games Made Impossible By Terrible Mechanics

6. Silent Hill 4: The Room - HOME INVASION!

Silent Hill 4 is a bit of a contentious topic among the fanbase, some absolutely adored its attempts to make the player live through a constant state of claustrophobia with its tight and angular room designs and the ever-persistent threat of enemies invading your personal space.

Others however didn't like the fact that the gameplay in this title changed considerably, focusing now on a lot of backtracking to the titular room in order to save and advance the plot. Personally, I'm in the former camp and loved the way the game made the most of the "uncanny" when revisiting the room, turning what was once a safe space into something much more terrifying.

However there is one aspect about this that was truly infuriating and this was the fact that around midway through the game, the sole save space that was once able to keep enemies out, suddenly loses this protection as well as its ability to heal the player thanks to the fans stopping working. The only way to purify the space of evil was to use candles and other hard to come by medallions, which are limited in number and hard to come by.

Never was it hinted to the player that such items would be needed outside of getting by enemies early on in the game, and as such you can end up being starved of resources and even your own items as entering the one save point could mean your own demise. Brilliant.
