8 Cyberpunk Machines That Changed Computing Forever
1. The Altair 8800 (1975)
Whether or not the Altair was the first commercially available computer is arguable. The much older Ferranti Mark 1 had already claimed that crown. But with ground- breaking microprocessors on board it was relatively small and light. You could even buy it in kit form and assemble it yourself.
It was the first computer that wouldn’t crush you like a pancake if it fell over... it would only break your foot.
The lumpy Altair inspired Bill Gates, Paul Allen, and Steve Jobs (who they?) to produce a much improved version called the Apple. The Apple was even smaller and could be hooked-up to a crude keyboard and a television screen.
The rest, as they say, is history.
