In the 1970s it was still considered groovy to have a computer the size of three washing machines in your office. They were probably used to impress clients rather than make data processing more efficient. The 3790 was one of the last of the big beasts.

It was marketed as an operator-oriented system, but few customers knew how to use one. It did come with a helpful instruction manual the size of a telephone book. However, it had a massive brain and made use of the innovative floppy disk.

Today IBM are a huge success story, but their 3790 is a fat turkey they would much rather forget.
