8 Nintendo Switch Criticisms That Also Apply To The PS4 & Xbox One
5. "It's Being Sold On Gimmicks"
"Portable home console gaming? Nobody'll do that". "Taking it to a friend's house? Yeah, right."
Obviously at this stage, we're yet to see exactly how much the Switch infiltrates your average social scenario, but even that isn't the thing I take issue with, because, well, remember the Kinect? I'll bet you Microsoft does, even though they'd rather both they and you forget.
Needless to say the Xbox One of today has about as much to do with voice-activation and motion controls as Hideo Kojima does with subtlety, but that didn't stop Microsoft attempting to shove it down our throats for two years straight.
Then there's the one-two swing-n'-a-miss that was PS Vita integration and PS VR for the PS4. The first was used as a way for Sony to half-arsedly address the dual screen functionality of something like the Wii U, yet I bet you can count the amount of people you know who own a PS Vita on one hand. PS VR, whilst being a solid proof of concept, is way too overpriced and devoid of worthwhile experiences to truly catch on, relegating it to the novelty bin unless Sony pull their finger out - which they almost definitely won't, as the two previous models of the PSP proved.
The cherry on top is social media functionality, the 'one button share' concept being the only notably distinct console function that separated the PS4 and Xbox One from that of the PS3 and 360. Complainers want to talk about how the Switch's portability is a 'gimmick'?
It's the only worthwhile hardware feature we've seen this entire generation.
