8 Popular Video Games That Need To Go Back To Their Roots

Sonic doesn't work in a 3D space.

I know it. You know it. Everyone knows it.

Yet, somehow, every year, Sega continues to develop a disaster of a 3D game where the little blue hedgehog gets stuck on walls, glitches into the floor and generally feels like a nightmare to play.

It's almost as if Sega's team are sat plunging a fork into an electrical socket every year, launching themselves across the room each time but somehow coming back with the expectation that the result will change.

The fix is simple, however. Put Sonic back into a 2D space where he belongs. If Sonic Mania showed us anything its that the demand is still there for a terrific retro Sonic game that replicates the mascot's earlier offerings.

With some good level design and attention to detail, Sonic could return back to the mainstream in a big way, the unique and fun gameplay that made his debut titles such big hits reawakening his dissipated fanbase.

The worst thing about Sonic has never been that his recent games are trash. It's that the goldmine Sega are sitting on by ignoring the franchise's potential in a 2D space is absolutely criminal. If Sega were smart, Sonic Mania would be the start of a big new future for the chilli-dog eating hero.
