8 Popular Video Games That Need To Go Back To Their Roots
1. Dead Rising
Dead Rising used to be a solid alternative to the overbearing wave of zombie games that released last generation.
It was fun and over-the-top in the best way, but it was also uniquely challenging and had a time mechanic that made its story and side missions feel uniquely tense. The first game and its arguably better sequel live on as two standout games from a genre filled with conventional retreads.
Then Dead Rising 3 and 4 came out.
The former in of itself was a major disappointment, losing all the challenge, tension and personality of its predecessors, but the latter was a complete departure that didn't understand or make an effort to even respect what made the franchise great.
It took away the iconic voice actor behind series staple Frank West before delivering a bland, dull and uninspired slog of a sequel that quickly flatlined the franchise.
But much like the living dead, there's easily room for Dead Rising to break free of its coffin and return to greatness. Bring back the smaller setting, the tense time limits, the challenging combat and the ironically over-the-top humour.
Dead Rising has life in it yet and with a little TLC, it could once again be the fresh alternative to the zombie genre we all need.
