7. Third-Party Support

The second half of the direct was a pretty incredible roster of things that seemed like pretty unlikely releases for Nintendo in this decade: Star Wars Outlaws, Split Fiction, Hades II, Final Fantasy VII Remake… Cyberpunk 2077?!
Again, hardcore gamers may scoff that this is a lot of stuff you can play elsewhere (and probably better!) but when you think of number of Switch consoles that land in the hands of the kinds of people who don’t keep up with every new release, that’s an avalanche of games that they might suddenly be exposed to.
More than this, this is just the beginning of the Switch 2.
There was a strange, awkward time early into the Wii U’s lifespan where the company tried to appeal to the masses a bit more by launching with - of all things - Assassin’s Creed III, Black Ops 2 and Batman Arkham City. As that console crashed and burned pretty early into its life, Nintendo relied on its own strength to keep things ticking over.
In many ways, the launch of the Switch 2 feels like the vindication for this failure as we have never seen a new Nintendo console arriving with such a varied and exciting roster of third-party titles. More than this, the appearances on-screen of developers at third-party studios, in most cases seemingly genuinely excited to be a part of it.
