Whether by choice or forced, Nintendo sort of stepped away from running alongside PlayStation and Xbox after the unfortunate stumbling of the GameCube, and made a new name for themselves with the Wii by being the quirky older sibling in gaming.

This reintegration of third-party support feels like Nintendo have re-arrived. After conquering that space they found themselves in, the Switch 2 looks like a more concerted effort to find a healthier middle ground.

And it’s the best thing for everyone. As established, it gives even more choice for consumers, but it also gives a new audience for developers. Nintendo have never been a company that rushes their games to print but as development times increase for everyone across the board, having more than just first-party releases means that the company can continue to pace themselves properly.

In terms of the effects this has on the wider industry? It’s hard to say. Again, there’s been a lot of pretty fair pushback to the pricing of the Switch 2. $80 games will obviously impact consumers weighing up which console they want to pick up moving forward. Still, there will be some who are attracted to the positives and unique selling points of the Switch 2. There are also those who are just more comfortable in the Nintendo eco-system who will be pleased that they can play games that they otherwise would have to shell out for another system to play (be that PS5, Xbox or PC).

After all, the Switch 2 isn’t just bringing over third-party games from the previous years. The game launches with the brand-new Civilization VII and will have Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 and Borderlands 4 at launch. And then there's exclusive rights to what is essentially Bloodborne 2... this is a big statement of intent.
