3. Learning To Break The Cycle - Sifu

When you first look at the wonderfully crafted and brilliantly executed Kung-Fu action game Sifu, you might feel like you've got the majority of the game figured out before you even throw your first punch.

Murdered Master + Evil Shadowy Organisation = Time To Break Some Skulls In The Name Of Revenge. Seems like a simple formula right?

Well as with anything in this game, things are not what they first appear, as with a mystical charm you're able to rise from the dead over and over in order to continue your quest for vengeance that provides power at the expense of aging your character, the action nosedives into the surreal at times. Add in artists that can suck you into their works and battles on arenas falling through time itself and your brain is already likely stretched to breaking point.

However, the moment that your mind will snap entirely comes not from the setting nor the outstanding combat, but from the realization that you can break the cycle of violence that you find yourself trapped in. By reducing a boss down to low health you're offered an option to end the fight with a stylish kill, however, if you ignore the prompt, let them rise up and defeat them again, you're now offered a chance to spare their lives.

To look at those who caused you so much grief right in the eye and choose the path of forgiveness is a powerful message indeed, and one that upends the assumed road that all those who seek vengeance must walk. Great stuff.
