8 Seemingly Forgotten Video Games That Need To Be Revived
3. Chrono
Last Release - Chrono Cross (1998) Square (Square Enix following the merger of the two companies) have always been most renowned for their Final Fantasy series of RPGs, which have been a console staple for almost thirty years. There are a number of other excellent titles in their back catalogue, however, perhaps none of which are as beloved as 1993's Chrono Trigger. Put together by a 'dream team' of Japanese designers, writers, producers and artists, the game was similar to Final Fantasy in tone, but was different enough to make it stand out on its own. Its story was a typically deep Square affair, sending six heroes across time in pursuit of a parasitic alien being. Each time period was unique in its own way, with its own cast of colourful characters and well-written subplots to keep players consistently engaged. A Playstation successor, Chrono Cross, wasn't directly linked to its predecessor and has never been released in Europe (Trigger wasn't either until a DS port in 2009). Despite being lesser known, it is a great game in its own right, swapping time travel for the exploration of parallel dimensions. The fanbase for both games remains huge, as evidenced by the creation of an unofficial direct sequel to Trigger, Crimson Echoes, which was developed over the course of five years between 2004 and 2009 and was 95% complete before Square Enix cruelly took legal action to shut it down. Many believe they should've instead brought the team on board and released the game officially, but it seems as if we'll always be restricted to wondering about what could have been.
