8 Subtly Brilliant Pokémon Designs

7. Hypno (#97)

Though Psychic-type Pokémon were incredibly overpowered in the series' first generation, Drowzee and Hypno were overlooked by most players in favour of the Abra evolution line. The Psi Pokémon's ready availability from Celadon City's Game Corner for just 120 coins combined with the eventual extreme power of Alakazam meant the decision was a no-brainer for most trainers.

Snubbing Hypno might make most sense from a battling perspective, but it is a shame as the Pokémon has one of the most intriguing designs all the original 151.

Like Drowzee, Hypno is superficially based on both a tapir and the baku - the nightmarish 'dream eater' of Japanese mythology (in Japanese, the term refers to both the animal and the spirit).

Look a little closer, and it is clear the full extent of Hypno's inspiration lies elsewhere. The propensity to read opponent Pokémon's dreams - and especially, that beard -  suggest the Hypnosis Pokémon is in fact modeled on renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud - one of the twentieth century's greatest proponents of dream analysis.

Sometimes a tail whip is just a tail whip.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
