8 Terrifying Video Game Moments That Are Laughably Outdated Now

5. Doom 3's Game Engine Gimmick Is The Spookiest Thing About It

Moving away from its bombastic roots, Doom 3 instead opted for a gameplay approach that owed more to survival horror games than it did previous releases in the franchise.

More of a showcase for the Id engine than anything else, in an attempt to show off the game's graphical capabilities the opening hour of the sequel focused on players stalking expertly-rendered corridors while encountering small groups of zombie-like enemies.

It was quite atmospheric at the time, with the lighting in particular often creating silhouettes that sparked your imagination and made you wary of whatever was lurking around the next corner.

However, looking back on the sequel it's clear that the game was only actually scary because the dynamic lighting system could make spooky shadows. The demons themselves lack the visual punch of anything found in Silent Hill or Resident Evil, and with the title's pioneering graphical capabilities being the norm now, the introduction of Doom just plays like any other boring corridor shooter.
