8 Things All Gamers Forgot They Used To Do

1. Actually Getting Overwhelmingly Excited Over New Stuff

As mentioned in the opening of this article games today are insanely amazing - but do they excite us? Every FPS looks practically the same, each has similar gameplay and nothing makes players drool like it used to. Pole Position was a racing arcade game that had pretty nifty pseudo 3D graphics and came in arcade cabinets you could actually sit in with car pedals and a shifter, but that wasn't what got folks giggly... it talked! Well, saying it talked is a bit of a stretch as it merely said "Prepare to qualify" and sounded like the woman speaking had a mouth full of mothballs... but still. Arcade games Astron Belt and Firefox (a really good arcade movie tie in) used actual film footage as the backdrop allowing the limited CPU speed to render more intricate effects then overlay them. In reality all it consisted of was some FMV streamed off a laserdisc with very basic game shooting mechanics and sprites genlocked on top of it, but oh it looked so supremely good for the time. Now we live in a world where gaming has never been easier and never more accessible to all, but occasionally it's worth harking back to a time where titles were played with enthusiastic wide eyes and a pocket full of coins. Where players actually had to work hard to get a home computer game running and a time when the reward was worth the effort. Somehow, despite all the techie nightmares and nonsense, the video gaming scene seemed more... fun. What's your favourite part of gaming that's no longer with us? Insert a coin in the comments section below, Player 1...
