8 Titles That Proved Licensed Video Games Can Be Awesome
4. Ducktales
This platformer was based on Disneys animation series of the same name. It first hit store shelves in 1989 on the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy. Developed by the team that had worked on the popular Mega Man series it was perhaps the first Disney franchise to translate to the video game industry successfully. The game saw you take on the role of Scrooge McDuck as he travels the world in search of more treasure. Ducktales received a large amount of positive acclaim when it released, with many considering it to one of the best games available for the NES. Of particular praise was the art style and soundtrack that was not only appealing to younger gamers but sophisticated enough to keep adult gamers interested. The challenging levels were a great example of good design and the responsive controls meant that the game never felt frustrating. It was a commercial success for Capcom and recently we saw a release in the form of DuckTales: Remastered on the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, Wii U and PC as well as a direct sequel in 1993.
