8 Titles That Proved Licensed Video Games Can Be Awesome

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series has seen a number of critically panned games over the years. One release though managed to make the transition from the comic book to video games work. Taking inspiration from the popular animated series the game made its way to arcade cabinets in 1991 before being ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System the next year. Turtles in Time sees players take on the role of one of the four heroes as they attempt to stop Shredder from carrying out his evil plans after being sent back in time. As a side scrolling beat €˜em up it features a variety of enemies, weapons and levels. Both versions received strong critical acclaim for staying faithful to the animated television show and for its distinctive art style. Most importantly though the game was a social experience. Best played with up to four friends, each could choose their favourite character as they fought through the campaign in arcades up and down the country. Each character had unique powers and abilities meaning that players had to work together to defeat enemies and overcome bosses.
