8 Video Game Endings That Cost You EVERYTHING

3. Hatred

Destructive Creations

In the case of controversial shoot 'em up Hatred, it's entirely fitting that this nastily nihilistic actioner ends with everything in the immediate vicinity going up in smoke - including the player character themselves.

Hatred casts players as a humanity-despising mass murderer literally called The Antagonist - careful not to cut yourself on the edge there.

The game's primary goal is to kill as many people as possible, leading up to a climax in which the Antagonist decides he's going to blow up a nuclear power plant near New York City.

At the end of game, once you reach the power plant's control room, the Antagonist is gunned down by a group of soldiers, but before he dies, he triggers his planted explosives, destroying the power plant, reducing the city to smouldering rubble, and killing literally millions of people, including himself.

It's an ending that costs the player everything, and yet that's entirely the point of Hatred - your 12-year-old cringe-lord cousin's favourite game ever.
