8 Video Game ‘Final Instalments’ That Shouldn't Actually Be The Last

5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Ignoring for a moment the gargantuan debacle surrounding this game's release and the internal disputes that accompanied it, The Phantom Pain didn't provide nearly enough closure for fans who had followed Big Boss and the wider Metal Gear lore since it all kicked off in 1987, which makes a sequel more necessary rather than just solely desirable. For all its gameplay accomplishments and storytelling spectacle, MGS V was vastly lacking in anything resembling a coherent narrative. It was piecemeal and convoluted, even if the stuff we did see bore the hallmarks of Kojima's very excellent style - minus the blatant sexism of course. If rumours are to be believed then Konami are already looking towards continuing the franchise with or without its creator, but this is obviously the least desirable approach to take with a potential sixth entry in the series. If anything's been made abundantly clear at this point it is that the publisher can't really be trusted with the keys to the franchise anymore, so while we all may be dying to learn more about the events that transpired between The Phantom Pain and the original Metal Gear, going with less might be the most desirable outcome of them all.
